Swahili in Arabic script-memorial plate at the Askari Monument, Dar es Salaam (1927) Etymology Historical linguists do not consider the Arabic influence on Swahili to be significant, since Arabic influence is limited to lexical items, most of which have been borrowed only since 1500, whereas the grammatical and syntactic structure of the language is typically Bantu. In Guthrie's geographic classification, Swahili is in Bantu zone G, whereas the other Sabaki languages are in zone E70, commonly under the name Nyika. Swahili is a Bantu language of the Sabaki branch.

The loanwords date from the contacts of Arabian traders with the Bantu inhabitants of the east coast of Africa over the last couple of centuries, which was also when Swahili emerged as a lingua franca. Yet sixteen to twenty percent of the Swahili vocabulary are Arabic loanwords, including the name of the language ( سَوَاحِلي sawāḥilī, a plural adjectival form of an Arabic word meaning 'of the coast'). In relatively more recent times, Swahili has borrowed the most from English.

Swahili developed historically by borrowing a number of words from foreign languages, particularly administrative terms from Arabic, but also words from Portuguese, Hindi and German. The number of Swahili speakers, be they native or second-language speakers, is estimated to be approximately 200 million. The institution currently serves as the leading body for promoting the language in the East African region, as well as for coordinating its development and usage for regional integration and sustainable development. The East African Community created an institution called the East African Kiswahili Commission (EACK) which began operations in 2015. Swahili is also one of the working languages of the African Union and of the Southern African Development Community. It is a lingua franca of other areas in the African Great Lakes region and East and Southern Africa, including some parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Malawi, Mozambique, the southern tip of Somalia, and Zambia. Due to concerted efforts by the government of Tanzania, Swahili is one of three official languages (the others being English and French) of the East African Community (EAC) countries, namely Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Swahili, also known by its native name Kiswahili, is the native language of the Waswahili who are found along the East African coast and litoral islands (primarily, modern coastal Tanzania/Kenya, Zanzibar/Pemba/Comoros Islands).
